Portugal, Alcochete: Freeport Designer Outlet Lisboa officially opened on September 2004, offering over 200 retail outlets, 40 restaurants and cafés, and extensive leisure facilities including a 21-screen multiplex cinema and an amphitheatre with weekly live entertainment. Unlike traditional shopping centres or malls, Freeport is an open-air environment that resembles a village packed with designer shops, selling surplus stock at reduced prices.
With its impressive 111,482 m², FreePort is the largest designer outlet in Europe. It is located in beautiful surroundings on the South bank of the Targus River just south of Lisbon and was, subsequent to the opening in September, awarded “Best 2004 building complex”.
Despite being the largest designer outlet village in Europe the space reserved for the fire protection system was so limited that existing solution on the market would not fit into the space. Consequently, the customer required a reliable, customised solution that did – at a very reasonable price.
In addition to the fire protection system, the project included water supply, an irrigation system and a wastewater solution.
The Grundfos Solution
In order to meet the customer’s specific demands Grundfos developed a new layout for the installation and customised four fire fighting systems with NK and CR pumps that fit perfectly in the confined space.
In order to assure the specified water supply requirements Grundfos chose to install a Hydro 2000 pump system with a total capacity of 150 m3/h. The booster ensures a constant pressure and reduces operation and maintenance costs to a minimum.
For the irrigation project Grundfos installed a Hydro 1000 booster system with CR pumps. With a total motor power of 230 kW the installation guarantees sufficient water for irrigation and fountains.
For the wastewater disposal, Grundfos installed five lifting stations with control panels and protections. The lifting stations pump the wastewater to large-scale stations, where two submersible heavy-duty pumps transport the wastewater to the municipal sewage system.
Grundfos won the project based on the innovative solution presented by Grundfos Portugal, and to a certain extent the positive reputation as a reliable and responsible supplier of high-quality pump solutions. As a full-line supplier, Grundfos was also able to comply withFreeport’s demand for single source responsibility, i.e. one supplier for all pumping systems.
Freeport has been very satisfied with their customised pump installations and has emphasised the Grundfos team’s commitment in connection with the commissioning of all the booster systems.
Customised solution for confined space - Single source responsibility - Low maintenance and operation costs - Grundfos was the supplier of allpump systems to Freeport, the largest designer outlet in Europe.
