Sony is one of the world's leading and most familiar audio, video, telecommunications and information technology companies; its products include TVs, video recorders, CD and DVD players plus products such as camcorders and games consoles.

Sony's decision to site its European base at Potsdamer Platz was an important milestone for Berlin, underlining its role as the interface between East and West. The product of an American-based architect, a European main contractor and a Japanese investor, the Sony Center is more than just a building. It is a meeting point for commerce and service providers, a springboard for culture and communication.


The Situation
The Sony Center, designed by the renowned architect Helmut Jahn, is a major European construction project. It sets new standards with its innovative architecture (particularly striking is the gigantic umbrella-roof) its high-quality technical installations and its sheer size. Doubling up as an office building, flats and a culture and communication centre, the construction demanded a complex infrastructure of high-quality long-lasting products. Due to the flexibility required with respect to the different uses of the building, all installations were also required to incorporate high power reserves.


The Grundfos Solution
The Sony Center has installed 261 Grundfos UPE and UPS-series heating circulatory pumps and 33 in-line pumps from the CDM, LMD, LPED and TPE series for the air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Most of the motors are speed-controlled.

Imtech Deutschland GmbH (formerly Rud. Otto Meyer), one of the largest installers of technical building services in Germany, was responsible as the main contractor for the entire building services installation. The short construction period was a challenge for all technical systems and installations had to be carried out practically simultaneously in the different buildings. Above all this required optimum project control -any delay would have had costly consequences. Reliable suppliers were essential: "The work carried out by Grundfos met with our expectations and the project progressed without a hitch," confirms Uwe Merkel from Imtech in Berlin. The Sony Center project developer, Tishman Speyer Properties, had already had a similarly positive experience with Grundfos on the Main-Tower project in Frankfurt/M.


The Outcome
Due to the short construction time, the delivery of all products was strictly controlled -this required an equivalent level of organisation at Grundfos. Grundfos also provided consultants throughout the entire project, from the offer phase to development and commissioning.

Because of the importance of the project, Imtech was particularly concerned about the reliability of the pumps installed. The planners also required plenty of upwards leeway in terms of pump power reserves. This was to accommodate the subsequent changes of use of parts of the Sony Center. Grundfos was able to supply all the required units and deliver on time. The predominantly variable-speed models offer the operator additional flexibility while optimising operating costs -in a project of this size, electrical power consumption on the part of the pumps is an important factor.
